PROMISERS to Host Workshop on PFAS-Free Technologies
The European research project PROMISERS will host its Open Exploitation and Innovation Workshop, bringing together experts to explore the future of PFAS-free technologies for clean
Pfas free polymer materials for proton exchange membrane (PEM)-Based fuel cells and electrolysers
The PROMISERS project goal lies in the advancement of new non per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) components for PEMFCs and PEMELs utilizing materials based on hydrocarbons and cellulose. The project will achieve this objective by focusing on developing multiple disruptive approaches for ionomers, membranes, electrode inks and MEAs which are free of PFAS. The project is aligned with sustainability principles, with no projected environmental barriers. Sustainable-by-design approaches and non-harmful materials will be targeted to ensure the environmental compatibility. Besides sustainability and zero pollution for the material fabrication also aspects such as safe-by-design, scalability and processing routes will be taken in account.
The main objective of the PROMISERS project lies in the advancement of new non PFAS components development, aiming to establish cost-effective production processes for PEMFCs and PEMELs components utilizing non-fluorinated materials. These components are expected to exhibit competitive performance, durability, and efficiency when compared to the current state-of-the-art PFAS PEMFC/EL.
Development of fluorine free proton exchange ionomer based on hydrocarbon polymer, hyperbranched mesoporous polybenzimidazole polymers and nanocellulose suitable in PEMEL and PEMFC as proton exchange membrane and as a binder for electrodes in combination with selected catalyst.
Development of fluorine-free proton exchange membrane (PEM)/composite membrane for FC and EL.
Catalyst selection and electrode ink formulation, including optimization for both micro porous layer and catalyst Layer.
Development of a PFAS-free PEMFC and PEMEL single cell stability and stack system consisting of at least five cells with an active area of 25 cm2.
Secure enhanced sustainability (environmental, safe-by-design, social) of the developed PFAS-free components.
Ensure economic viability of components, processes, scalability and business potential through novel simulation approaches and techno-economic assessment.
